Reviews Editor (closed)

Minola Review is currently seeking applications for the position of Reviews Editor. This is a part time position with a time commitment of approximately 4-12 hours per month.

Minola Review welcomes applications from women or nonbinary individuals, with priority given to those who identify as being part of marginalized or underrepresented groups or backgrounds, specifically those who identify as BIPOC, LGBTQ(IA+), disabled or as having a disability, and those from outside Toronto.

Responsibilities

  • Solicit ARCs and reading copies of forthcoming and/or newly released books from publishers which align with Minola Review’s mandate and vision for the quarterly issues due out on December 15, March 15 and June 15

  • Solicit reviews/create a call for reviews based on books you have selected which align with Minola Review’s mandate and vision

  • Select and edit four (4) 250-500 word reviews per each issue.

  • Collaborate with the Poetry and Fiction/CNF Editors to produce quarterly issues within the timeframes given

  • Participate in editorial board meetings (held via Zoom) held during the first week of November, February, and May

  • There is also the opportunity to help plan our annual launch and celebration of readers, held in the Spring

  • No prior experience soliciting reviews/reading copies needed but prior experience with writing/editing is an asset

Payment

We are pleased to offer an honorarium of $1000 for this position divided into 3 roughly equal payments to coincide with the launch of each issue, for the period of September 2021 to July 2022. This position is subject to renewal based on future funding.

Fiction/CNF Reader / Editor Mentorship (closed)
Minola Review is currently seeking applications for the position of Fiction/CNF reader / editor mentorship. This is a part time position with a time commitment of approximately 4-12 hours per month. We are seeking two (2) candidates. The position runs from late September 2021 to July 31, 2022.

The position involves reading submitted stories and essays and assisting the Fiction/CNF Editor in selecting pieces for upcoming issues. The editor mentorship component reflects our plan for this to be an immersive yet non-intimidating learning experience, with the Fiction/CNF Editor being ready to assist and offer guidance on the process of putting together journal issues, and on the publication/writing world in general. As a result, we are open to and excited to receive applications from candidates that do not have prior experience working with journals but who are interested in getting a start in this field.

  • Attend four virtual editorial meetings (one per quarterly issue) with the Fiction/CNF Editor and discuss the strengths of your selected pieces. The meetings will be held during the first week of November, February, and May.

  • Attend an initial introductory editorial meeting (late September 2021) with the Fiction/CNF Editor where we will chat about the journal, reading submissions, and the position in general

  • Collaborate with the Poetry and Fiction/CNF Editors to produce quarterly issues within the timeframes given

  • Optional: solicit work from writers that also align with Minola Review’s mandate and vision

  • There is also the opportunity to help plan our annual launch and celebration of readers, held in the Spring

Payment

We are pleased to offer an honorarium of $100 per issue for this position for the period of September 2021-July 2022, for a total of $400.
